Proper storage of your hat will help protect it from damage. Below are some quick tips and tricks on how to keep your hat in top-notch condition when it's not on your head!
- Store your hat in a cool, dry place. Moisture is one of the worst enemies of hats.
- In order to keep your hats shape and to ease the stacking of multiple hats purchase hat boxes (cardboard or cloth-covered boxes are great). Only place one hat per box to ensure that the shape is kept and the trim does not get damaged.
- For short term storage of a hat or hats you wear often consider purchasing a well-crafted hat stand. This will help the hat maintain it's shape and will keep the brim from being crushed.
- If you have a hat that has feathers that stick up above the crown of the hat and won't fit in a box a well made hat stand would be the best storage method.
- To store wide brimmed hats you can either place them upside down in the hat box with a little acid-free tissue paper on the bottom, or you can store them right side up with tissue paper lightly stuffed into the crown to take the pressure off the brim.
- To store hats with upturned or flat brims you can place them directly into the box right side up.
- To store hats with down turned, dipped or sloped brims you can either place them upside down in the hat box with a little acid-free tissue paper on the bottom, or you can store them right side up with tissue paper lightly stuffed into the crown to take the pressure off the brim.
- To keep the shape of any decorative bows during prolonged storage place some lightly crushed tissue paper into the loops of the bow.
